Day of betrayal: Two years after the 29th of Ramadan massacre [3 June 2019]

How did the whole story start?

The families of the martyrs of the 2019 massacre outside the military headquarters invited people for an Iftar meal on 11 May at the massacre scene to commemorate. The invitation was held under the banner of 29th of Ramadan movement.

Earlier, the families of martyrs held a news conference at the offices of Sudan News Agency (SUNA) which was addressed by Amira, mother of martyr Mohammed Hashim Matar, on behalf of the martyrs’ families. She called on the Sudanese to attend an Iftar meal, stressing that such an event was a form of peaceful assembly which is a constitutional right. She also urged both civilian and military authorities to respect peoples’ right to peaceful assembly, calling on them to protect civilians

What happened after the invitation for the Iftar meal?

Early on the day, the Janjawid-led Military Council decided to stay ahead of events by blockading all routes leading to the military headquarters. In reaction, protesters blockade several streets across the three-town capital - Khartoum, Omdurman, and Khartoum North.

Commenting on the move by the Janjawid-led Military Council, mother of martyr Matar blatantly criticized the military’s reaction. She said:

<aside> 💡 “If the Sudanese army had been headed by leaders who believed in the honor of being a soldier, of patriotism and who sincerely believed in the revolution, things would have been completely different.”

She went on to say: “Instead of issuing their disgraceful statement ordering the closure of the roads leading to the military headquarters, they should have welcomed the mothers, fathers, families, and friends of the martyrs and the peaceful protester. They should have announced their readiness to welcome them with military music in honor of those who sacrificed their blood for the sake of the glorious revolution. Indeed, they should have ordered their soldiers to compete in serving the peaceful protesters.”

***She concluded by saying: “But, at the end of the day, they are the instigators of what happened on the [3rd June 2019] night of betrayal and the symbols of shame and disgrace linked to the military headquarters bloody massacre of peaceful protestors. Adding insult to injury, they unleashed their [media] bats of darkness against us, with the intention of extinguishing the flames of an invincible revolution - a revolution with huge challenges and a long march to victory.

May glory be to the honorable martyrs.”***

A comment by Mohamed Khalifa:

“The moment, they [the military] blockaded the routes leading to the military headquarters, we blockaded the entire three-town capital within three hours - a clear message to all sides to know what they are really capable of doing. The Revolution Shall Continue!”

The moment when protesters managed to breach the security cordon and the convergence of marches on the vicinity of the military headquarters:

Around 05:00 pm protesters started to arrive at the military headquarters area using the Nile Avenue and the Al-Mu’allim Hospital road. Live video broadcasts were showing that protesters had already breached the security cordon imposed by the military. Two marches, one coming from the district of Burri and the other through the University subway, converged.

Protesters emotionally started hugging each other and chanting revolutionary slogans. Many protesters could only manage to express their emotions through tears. To them, the military HQ arena was like a homeland. It was where their dream of a glorious motherland.

Slogans chanted by protesters included:

“Where they killed us? They killed us here”

“The people demand retribution for the martyrs”

“We, the free revolutionaries, are determined to finish the journey”

And of course, Palestine was there ♥️🇵🇸

<aside> 💡 What was remarkable was the solidarity of the December revolutionaries with the revolutionaries of Al-Aqsa Mosque who are stationed in Jerusalem, who are steadfast in the face of the Zionist attacks on them. Our pain was one
